(Re) Creating Victorian Times… ….within the Glasgow Digital Library, a whole environment approach Corfu, 21st June 2002 Dennis Nicholson Centre for Digital Library Research Strathclyde University, Glasgow

Overview n ‘Standalone’ Descriptions: u GDL u Victorian Times n CDLR, Whole Environment R&D n Illustrations n Holistic perspective on GDL, VT n Lessons

The GDL... n Aims to create wholly digital library to support teaching, learning and research at all levels in the city. n Based initially on the 3 universities, the GCG (FE), and the public library n But planning ultimately to make itself a virtual co-library of majority of public institutions in Glasgow

The GDL... n Looks one day is to be a major (distributed) digital resource library n But its initial basis will be u Electronic resources created by the institutions u Public domain information u Joint purchases (maybe) u Digitisation initiatives (e.g. VT)

Victorian Times n No direct link but: in Glasgow, so part of the distributed GDL set n NOF Funded, CDLR, SO, LSE n Focus on lifelong learning: cultural enrichment, citizenship, re-skilling, n BL ‘Sense of Place’ Consortium n Parliamentary Papers and related materials from 1837 – 1901, plus…

Victorian Times n Supplementary material from such as: u Centre for Political song u Heatherbank Museum of Social Work u Springburn Community Museum (15,000 photographs on our themes - see samples at u Glasgow's Story NOF Project u East Dunbartonshire Public Library Local History collections u Similar ‘colour’ from other areas of UK

Victorian Times n Wars caused great changes : freedom, independence, Boer, Transvaal, Franco –Prussian, American Civil n Electoral reform brought voting power to the (male) masses. n Living, health, social conditions improved n Engineering, communication, transport advances ‘shrank’ the world

Victorian Times n Themes: u Housing: better for some, but Industrial Revolution, move to towns, led to urban squalor for most u Health: Advances in medicine, but also crowded living conditions and poor working environments for most u Industry and the Work Place: from rural occupations to industries (engineering, shipbuilding and mining…) u Labour and Trade Unions: Increasing moves towards workers rights, representation, electoral reform… u Transport: railways, mass public transportation, end of canals, shipbuilding, trade with the colonies grew. u Education: church schools gave way to state schools, education became compulsory for the first time

Victorian Times n Papers, reports, the main content n Built around the content are notes, texts and bibliographies written by an expert on the subject matter, and… n …. the digitised materials will be intelligently and interactively embedded in a single, multi-level, timeline-based, progressive learning and research environment n Different landscapes for…

Victorian Times n The pupil: a school pupil (age 5 and up) n A student of any age in HE or FE n Researcher: in Victorian social history, politics, or economics. n The resident (our street 100-150 yrs ago) n The journalist n The politician n The family (lifelong learners)

CDLR: Holistic R&D n Both GDL and VT based at CDLR: u Strathclyde University, 1999 (1991) u Quality research/practical outcomes u Wide spectrum of digital libraries and digital learning issues u International contribution, but with a Scottish focus u Work characterised by holistic or whole environment approach to researching and developing the distributed digital information environment

Whole Environment R&D n On the research front, this means: u Considering project facets, not in isolation, but in the context of the whole distributed information environment (and vice versa), u Considering interaction in both at every operational level, from the technical to the human (including user, staff, organisational). n On the development front, it means u Ensuring that solutions work for the environment as a whole and all of its facets, not just for the particular facet in which the development takes place.

Whole Environment R&D n We think this is important because we believe the distributed environment must grow as a single thing, and staff, user, organisational cultures must grow with it if the end result is to be an integrated, user-responsive whole n We therefore deliberately foster an R&D environment rich in a range of inter-related projects and initiatives that study, feed on, and inform both each other and the development of the whole n So, for example...

Illustrations… n Glasgow Digital Library: u Regional standards for interoperability; collaborative collecting; human mechanisms u Regional context for VT n Hairst u Harvesting resources via OAI (including VT type resources), with distributing VT and GDL metadata and with integrating VT and GDL catalogues with OAI metadata via integration with Z39.50 catalogue

Illustrations… n Aspect, Springburn, Red Clydeside u Offer additional digitised content for integration within VT, and allow us to work on interoperability issues n Victorian Times, Cultural Portal u Offer each other digitised content and a common interest in user needs, user type landscaping, digital libraries as learning environments, and interoperability

Illustrations… n HILT u Subject terminologies mapping n SLIC Joint CORC subscription u Furthering the collaborative collecting and cataloguing of free internet resources, ensuring interoperability of VT/GDL metadata n CAIRNS, SCONE, SCAMP, COSMIC u Providing the Scottish co-operative infrastructure and technologies within which the GDL and VT can develop, grow

Co-operative Infrastructure Various user nodes SCONE collections database with staff CCM tools/ landscape control --- Future SCAN integration? COSMIC co-ordinates: Our Portal Other Portals So we can all join in CORC Metadata Issues: Items, Collections Joint R&D Plan CAIRNS cross searchable catalogue with landscaping mechanism driven by collections database various activities including: CCCG

Descriptions: GDL / VT n Does any of this matter? We think it does. n GDL, VT will exist in a complex web of inter-related services n Not sensible to treat them as standalone n With this approach, they are more than that...

Descriptions: GDL / VT n They are: u One facet of the problem of developing a coherent, user responsive distributed environment u One set of embryonic user, staff, service cultures growing up in a new world u One perspective on requirements u One focal point for learning u One portal/view on the global I.E. u Projects feeding on, being informed by other projects (and vice versa) rather than developing in isolation

Victorian Times n Contributes: u Different user landscapes and environments u Digital libraries as learning environments u Co-operation and interoperability n Benefits from: u Cross-searching technologies from CAIRNS u Landscaping mechanism from CAIRNS u People level mechanisms via CoSMiC u Terminology mapping, control: HILT, CORC u Collaborative collecting via SCONE and GDL

Lessons n Applicable – but not limited to – GDL/VT u Coherent distributed virtual ‘libraries’ won’t just happen – we must co-operate to manage retrieval/ user environments u Distributed networked collections need collaborative management u Co-operation is hard u People interoperability a pre-requisite of technical and metadata interoperability

Lessons n Finally, that information professionals must develop appropriate new perspectives: u To deal with this new multidimensional, distributed, multifaceted environment u They must ‘grow’ - expand their skills, understanding, know-how, consciousness u And learn, above all, to…

Think globally acting locally before
