KEY TERMS : Argument: A reason or idea forward in support of or in opposition to a point of view : To maintain that something is true Claim: To maintain that something is true Substantive topic or text: The topic or text being offered or considered (this may be in the form of a prompt or essay topic) Sound, well-founded facts that cannot be denied. Valid reasoning: Sound, well-founded facts that cannot be denied. Proof that is directly related to the subject at hand and that is adequate to prove the claim. Relevant and sufficient evidence: Proof that is directly related to the subject at hand and that is adequate to prove the claim. On Wednesday, May 7 th, we arrived to the Volupides household shortly after 1:30AM. Upon arrival, we found Arthur Volupides dead at the foot of the stairs with a glass in his left hand. The glass was still whole and unscratched, suggesting the glass was placed there after the fall. Arthur was laying on his back, implying that he fell backwards and did not slip. Upon further investigation, we found that there were no attempts to break a fall; all décor was still perfectly placed on the wall, the carpets were all in perfect position, and there was no indication that any remaining liquid had spilled from the glass. Mrs. Volupides stated that she left for the country club after getting in a fight with her husband. She was also drinking with her friends, and they were coming to her house for another drink. Even though she got there ten minutes before her friends, she did not contact the police about the incident. When her friends arrived, she said “Something terrible happened. Arthur slipped and fell on the stairs. He was coming down for another drink—he still had the glass in his hand—and I think he’s dead. Oh my god—what shall I do?” This statement was confirmed by the friends present at the scene. Sample:

After a full autopsy, it was confirmed that Arthur died from a wound to the head. Our conclusion is that Queenie is lying about the cause of Arhtur’s death. She was still upset about their earlier fight and hit Arthur from behind with the frying pan. It is our recommendation that she be charged for the murder of Arthur Volupides.
