In about 10 minutes walk around the Library Square and examine any historical information that is evident. Write down anything that you can find out about dates and events that might have occurred. List all the information that you can find in the square. Question 1 Describe the architectural style of the Victorian State Library and why it was built in such a way.

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Question 2 Walk to Little Lonsdale Street and along beside the library between the QV Centre and the library. Walk towards Spring St and when you get to Russell St then cross over to begin the next part of the trail.

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Question 3 On the right hand side of Little Lonsdale Street, not far from the corner of Russell Street, you will see an opening into a churchyard. Walk into the car park area of the churchyard. This is part of the Wesleyan Church. This site is still part of the Wesleyan Mission.

Look out for the small stone double-story house in the yard. Who would have lived there? Find the large old olive tree. Think about what this churchyard was like before it was turned into the car park. Make a list of words to describe what it is like.

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Question 4 Walk back into Little Lonsdale Street. Across the road from the churchyard is a three storey building on the corner of Bennett’s Lane. What might the building have been a hundred years ago?

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Observation: Cross Little Lonsdale Street carefully and look at the iron grate on the ground at the entrance to Bennett’s Lane. This is an early storm water drain – built over one hundred years ago.

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Question 6 Look back across the road at the long brick wall of the churchyard. Find the section that has been filled in with a different type of red brick. Why do you think this section was later bricked like this?

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Question 7 Walk along Little Lonsdale Street until you come almost to the end of the brick wall. Find the clues that show there used to be a gate leading into the church through this wall. There used to be a building here.

Read the faded sign under the blue paint of the building on the right hand side (the one with the street light on it). What sort of business was this?

The brick building on the right hand side (next door to the Italian Restaurant) was built in 1859 but not as a Korean restaurant. What do you think it was?

United through the Games - Integrated units © State of Victoria, 2005 Question 10 Carefully cross Exhibition Street at the lights. Find Coopers Hotel on the corner of Exhibition and Little Lonsdale Streets. This was built in the 1880s and is described as ‘Boom style’ building.

On the left hand side (just after the Little Lonsdale Food Court and almost at the corner of Exhibition Street) is a large modern building called ‘Little Lon Retail’. Walk through the glass automatic doors. The area you are standing in used to be an alley one hundred years ago. What are the clues that this was an outdoor space?
