3 Why is CSUN required to seek additional enrollment management tools? CSU basic admissions requirements Effect of CSU/state funding (e.g., enrollment target) on admissions Effect of the gap between enrollment demand and available resources

4 What is Impaction? A condition where there are more qualified applicants than funded seats available. Impaction can be declared at: - Campus level (e.g., freshman and/or transfer) - Academic program level (e.g., by major and/or program) Permits the use of higher/supplemental requirements for some applicants to be eligible Eligible applicants are admitted based upon space available Impaction plan must be approved by the Chancellor’s Office

5 Is CSUN Currently Impacted at the Freshman Level? Yes. CSUN is impacted at the freshman level - Applicants from a defined local admissions area meet basic requirements - Non-local applicants admitted based on space available and must have higher GPA/test score 17 CSU campuses have freshman impaction

7 Is CSUN Currently Impacted at the Transfer Level? No. CSUN is not impacted at the transfer level. CSUN is one of only 8 campuses not impacted for transfer students: - Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Humboldt, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Stanislaus

8 Is CSUN Currently Impacted at the Academic Program Level? Yes. CSUN has academic program impaction for 3 majors in the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics: - Accounting - Finance - Financial Planning

13 Proposed Impaction Plan In order to reduce overall enrollment by 1% per year, add capacity for: Impacting any academic program as needed Reducing the local admissions area for freshman impaction Adding transfer impaction Retaining discretion in the admission of up to 5% of the entering class There is no plan for impaction at the graduate level.

14 Phase I Plans: 2016-2017 Geographic changes to local admissions area for first-time freshman Introduction of transfer student impaction Add program impaction for Psychology, Kinesiology, Music, and Cinema and Television Arts Ventura County students pursuing majors not offered at CSU Channel Islands are treated as local area applicants

15 CSUN/CSUCI Degree Overlap Students wishing to major in the degrees on this list who live in Ventura County and Santa Barbara County south of Gaviota are considered “local” to CSUN. Some majors have additional admission criteria through program impaction. 22 Phase II Plans: 2017-2018 If Phase I is not sufficient, additional academic program impaction may be deployed in 2017-2018 - Additional admissions criteria based on GPA and other established criteria

23 Next Steps and Timeline Community meetings March 5, 9, 10, 11 Community comment through March 13 Submit plan to CSU March 16 Proposed changes would be implemented for 2016-2017 and re-evaluated Graduate admissions is not affected.
