Development of Fundamental Skills of Inquiry Credit Hours Courses taken Basic writing skills Either ENGL 1101 or ENGL 1103 3 Basic writing skills ENGL 1102 (students who take ENGL 1103 do not have to take ENGL 1102) 0-3 Mathematics and logical reasoning MATH 1xxx3 Mathematics and logical reasoning One of the following: MATH 1xxx, STAT 1xxx, or PHIL 2105 3

Inquiry in the Sciences Credit Hours Courses taken Natural sciences Two of the following, one must have a lab: ANTH 2141; BINF 1110; BIOL 1110, 1115, 1273, 1274; CHEM 1111/12, 1200, 1203/04, 1251/52 ESCI 1101; GEOL 1200, 1210; ITIS 1350; PHYS 1101/02, 1130, 120x, 2101/02; PSYC 1101 4 (with lab) 3-4 (with or without lab) Social science One of the following: ANTH 1101; ECON 1101, 2101; GEOG 1105; POLS 1110; SOCY 1101; 3

Themes of Liberal Education for Private and Public Life Credit Hours Courses taken Arts and society One of the following: LBST 1101, 1102, 1103, 1104, 1105 3 Western cultureLBST 21013 Global understanding LBST 21023 Ethical and cultural critique One of the following: LBST 2211, 2212, 2213, 2214, 2215 3

Communication Skills Credit Hours Courses taken Writing in the discipline course in the major One three semester hour course or its equivalent totaling three semester hours in the major with the W designation 3 Writing in the discipline course A second course with the W designation (Can be in the major or outside the major) 3 Oral communication A course with the O designation (If a course is designated for both O and W, the one course can be applied to both.) 1-3 Note: Foreign Language requirements are set by the College or Major(s).

8 Equivalencies –Trf credit for a UNCC course –Cannot be repeated Exemptions –Trf credit exempts from Gen Ed requirement ALWAYS CHECK THE CAPP AUDIT! Program Exemption: Community College AA or AS degree (not AAS) Look for INST 1111 Reviewing Transfer Credit

9 Being Strategic (when requirements overlap) Use a template to ensure students don’t duplicate gen ed clases that are required for the major Advising check sheets should make overlaps clear Emphasize integrated nature of Gen Ed and the major (Gen Ed + Major = Program of Study)

14 Allowing Exploration (to keep options open for a minor, 2 nd major, or change of major) Mathematics / Logic (the 2 nd course) Taking two math courses makes sense if a student is interested in a program that requires calculus Taking statistics makes sense if a student is interested in the social sciences

15 Allowing Exploration Sciences Chemistry and Physics are a foundational courses in many STEM fields Social Sciences Except for ECON 1101, all of the options are required courses in those majors/minors

16 Allowing Exploration LBST Choosing an LBST taught by faculty from a given department can give students a taste of what that field is like
