Foothill Intervention, Reinforcement and Enrichment Program

FIRE Foothill’s Ready for an Upgrade

Foothill Intervention, Reinforcement and Enrichment Program

FIRE (previously SDL- Student Directed Learning) is a 30-minute, mid-day advisory period that is scheduled weekly Tuesday through Friday between 3rd/4th periods and the extended lunch period. All 9th grade students new to Foothill’s campus are enrolled in the FIRE advisory period during their first semester on campus. New 10th, 11th and 12th grade students may "opt in" as well during their first semester on campus as they adjust to their new surroundings. FIRE provides a structured environment in which new FTHS students can connect with teachers and experienced student mentors; learn about FTHS' programs, procedures and traditions; and receive academic and social support in transitioning into the rigorous high school environment provided at Foothill Technology High School.

Foothill Intervention, Reinforcement and Enrichment Program

FIRE Provides Equal Opportunity for ALL Students Foothill exists to provide a high quality education for ALL students FIRE potentially benefits 100% of FTHS students –All students are on campus between periods 3/4 and lunch –At mid-day, anyone and everyone can attend as needed or as assigned –Access available to teachers, administration, labs, media center & counselors –No student who needs assistance will be overlooked or allowed to fail SDL currently benefits less than 25% of FTHS students –Only freshman who are NOT athletes are required to enroll –10-12 th grade students that are on campus after period 7 can attend to get help as needed – but DO they??? –Because of “sports dismissal” athletes cannot attend SDL to get needed help or to make-up work/tests

FIRE Results in Schedule Upgrade for 2005-2006 Foothill’s schedule is designed to provide greatest instructional advantage Block Schedule altered to make FIRE available to ALL students FIRE – 30-minute advisory period each Tuesday through Friday –Shortened advisory time by 5 minutes – SDL was 35 minutes FIRE follows periods 3 and 4, and precedes lunch for enrolled students –No longer at the end of the day –No longer follows period 7 Not enrolled in FIRE? – longer lunch period helps with rush and crowding No period 7 on Mondays – more equality in instructional minutes
