2. WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING  “Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

BENEFITS OF SERVICE LEARNING  “They offer opportunities to engage in problem-solving by requiring participants to gain knowledge of the specific context of their service-learning activity and community challenges.”  “They promote deeper learning because the results are immediate and uncontrived.”

4. CHARACTERISTICS OF SERVICE LEARNING  “Service-learning is more likely to be personally meaningful to participants and to generate emotional consequences, to challenge values as well as ideas, and hence to support social, emotional and cognitive learning and development.”  “They involve cooperative rather than competitive experiences and thus promote skills associated with teamwork and community involvement and citizenship.”

5. WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?  Overnight relay-style event  Teams of people camp out around a track  Members of each team take turns walking around the track for the duration of the event  Food, games and activities provide entertainment and fundraising opportunities  Family-friendly environment for the entire community

6. WHAT RELAY FOR LIFE MEANS TO ME?  Relay For Life is a tradition in our family. My grandmother passed away from Lymphatic Cancer. Walking and participating in this event allows me to support her and the lives of many dealing with a loved one who has or has had cancer.

7. HOW I HELPED!  I was a registered Relay For Life participant.  With my teammates from VSU, I helped raise money for the American Cancer Society in hopes of saving someone's life.  I also donated money towards my Freshman Year Experience team in efforts that someone who has cancer will receive funds needed to help for cancer treatment.
