Direct Injection Reduced Emissions Improved Efficiency Presented By: Andrew Findlay Justin Johnson
2
Competition Goals: Stimulate industry to produce snowmobiles for pristine areas This has been accomplished U of I Goals Meet NPS regulations Produce a design that is marketable to all consumers across the country. 2012 EPA 2006 NPS 2003 U of I E Score100170193
3
Direct InjectionChassis Modifications Sound absorbing and vibration damping materials to reduce noise output Electric oil injection to reduce oil consumption Exhaust outlet designed to reduce noise Clean, quiet two-stroke Adapt E-TEC injectors to Polaris 600cc engine Improve combustion chamber geometry Adapt the E-TEC 55 volt power source Operate engine in homogeneous and stratified combustion modes
4
Enabling the right to ride in sensitive areas by improving the two-stroke engine Increased gas mileage Reduced cost for the outfitter Increased range or lighter weight with smaller gas tank Maintains stock power and handling characteristics Minimal cost over production snowmobile Adaptable chassis for different riding styles
5
E-TEC© high-pressure fuel injectors Cylinder head 55V power source

Injector Head Spark Plug Fuel Cone Piston Cylinder Port Geometry Cooling passages
8
Squish Area Dome Angle Improved near nozzle geometry Spark plug location Stock cooling passage geometry Dome Radius
9
Taken in December, 2004 74% less HC + NO x and 41% less CO (5 mode weighted average) without a catalyst. Displayed areas tuning was needed most.
10
Less than $200 difference between stock and cost of implementing direct injection technology due to injectors, fuel pump, and catalyst.
11
Improve the look of a stock production snowmobile Packaging power source inside stock housing eliminates need for external alternator or battery Lightest IC weight at this years competition
12
Continued production of two-stroke engine Meeting the customer demand of the two- stroke power-to-weight ratio Meeting emission standards Minimize implementation cost by using currently available technology Chassis adjusts to many riding positions
13
Direct-Injection solves many of current problems Improves fuel efficiency Reduces pollution emissions Maintains stock power-to-weight ratio and handling Feasible solution that is realistic
