The Baptism of Jesus Matt. 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

The Baptism of Jesus Mk. 1:9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.“ Lk. 3:21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."

Jesus Was Baptized Jesus came to John intending to be baptized (Mk. 1:9). – He knew his Father’s will and he was going to fulfill it. John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins (Mk. 1:4). Jesus knew no sin… 2 Cor. 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus Was Baptized To Fulfill All Righteousness John’s baptism was NOT a part of the Old Law. But John’s baptism was commanded by God Jn. 1:33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” We “fulfill all righteousness” when we are baptized into Christ for the remission of our sins (Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38).

When Jesus Was Baptized He Was immersed in Water Matt. 3:16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water… Mk. 1:10 And immediately, coming up from the water… Acts 8:36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water…

When Jesus Was Baptized He Was immersed in Water Paul taught that in baptism we are united with Christ in the “likeness of his death.” Rom. 6:3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.

Jesus Is the Son of God Matt. 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” John 1:1-14 – John clearly taught this fact! Jn. 20:31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. Church built the church on this fact (Matt. 16:15-18). Matt. 14:33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Even the centurion exclaimed, “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Mk. 15:39).
