Studies in 1 Corinthians (40) Baptized into the Body of Christ 1 Cor. 12:12-13
2
The Body of Christ, His Church The body – a collective noun “So also is Christ” – a fitting description of His church
3
The Body of Christ, His Church “Church” – a collective noun From Greek word, e)kklhsi/a (ekklesia) meaning a calling out (assembly – cf. Ac. 19:32 )
4
The Body of Christ, His Church Universally – the body of ALL who are saved – Mat. 16:18, Eph. 1:22- 23, 3:10, etc.
5
The Body of Christ, His Church Local – descriptive of the body of the saved joined together at a given location to do the work of God – 1 Cor. 1:2, 1 Thess. 1:1; Gal. 1:2, 1 Cor. 4:17, 7:17
6
The Body of Christ, His Church Our text does not use the word “church” – but the context refers to the church at Corinth Church as a body - Cf. Eph. 1:22-23, 5:23, Col. 1:18, 24
7
The Body of Christ, His Church Paul’s point – the church needed to be functioning as a body – working together instead of against one another!
8
By one Spirit baptized… (13) What is the baptism Paul has in mind? How does it relate to the context of unity?
9
By one Spirit baptized… (13) The Baptism is water baptism for salvation IT puts us into Christ – Rom. 6:3-4, Gal. 3:27 Available to all – see also Gal. 3:28
10
By one Spirit baptized… Why water baptism? Associated with our salvation Acts 2:38, 8:36-39, 22:16; 1 Pet. 3:20-2, etc.
11
By one Spirit baptized… Why water baptism? An appeal similar to Romans 6:1-2. Being baptized they put on Christ which means they CHANGED their relationship and conduct (toward sin & one another)
12
By one Spirit baptized… Why water baptism? In baptism we receive “the gift of the Holy Spirit” Acts 2:38 ALL who are saved receive the Holy Spirit in some way – similar to receiving God – 1 John 3:24, Jesus – Eph. 3:17 & the word – Col. 3:16.
13
By one Spirit baptized… Why water baptism? Baptism & the Holy Spirit Acts 2:38 John 3:3-5 Titus 3:5
14
By one Spirit baptized… Why NOT baptism of the Holy Spirit? This “baptism” served a special purpose Only two occasions: Acts 2:1-4 - Apostles Acts 10:44-48 - Cornelius
15
By one Spirit baptized… Why NOT baptism of the Holy Spirit? Not available to all Consider the Samaritans: Acts 8:4-17 – baptized, but the Holy Spirit had not fallen upon them. DIFFERENCE between “gift of the Holy Spirit” & “spiritual gifts from Holy Spirit”
16
By one Spirit baptized… Paul’s point in our text: By one Spirit, in baptism we are joined together in Christ. If the same Spirit brought us together – let’s ACT united! “Drink of one Spirit” – all partaking of same Spirit – again the call for unity!
17
By one Spirit baptized… NOTE: In our context, the various parts of the body are individuals (not congregations). Paul is describing the brethren at Corinth.
18
May we strive to function as the body of Christ in all we do together!
