Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 2 Baptism is essential in order to obtain salvation – Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21 Baptism is essential in order to get into Christ – Romans 6:3-6; 1 Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:26,27 We are NOT saved by “BAPTISM” Alone!! – Mark 16:16; Romans 10:9,10; Acts 8:37; Acts 17:30 If Baptism is “unto” the remission of sins – must a Christian be baptized again every time he sins? (Acts 8:18-24; 1 John 1:9,10) Are there circumstances that would require a person, having once been baptized, to be baptized again?

Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 3 Apollos had been in Ephesus teaching the baptism of John - Ac 18:24,25 Apollos was corrected by Aquila and Priscilla – Acts 18:26 When Paul arrived at Ephesus he found some disciples – Acts 19:1

Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 4 Paul knew that something was wrong with their baptism if they did not know about the Holy Spirit! Mat 28:18-20 Acts 19:2 (KJV) He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 5 Not “have you been baptized!” Not “were you baptized for the remission of sins!” But - “into what then were you baptized?” Acts 19:3 (NKJV) And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism."
6
Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 6 Paul's question implies that it is important what one "knows, understands, & believes“ when baptized! Acts 19:3 (NKJV) And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism."

Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 7 John’s baptism was looking toward Christ – Mat 3:11 John’s baptism was “unto the remission of sins” – Mk 1:4; Lk 3:3 Temporarily authorized by God, (Matthew 21:25-27; Luke 7:30), Acts 19:4 (NKJV) Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."
8
Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 8 They were baptized in the name of Christ, i.e. by His authority. (cf. Mat 28:18,19; Acts 2:38; 8:16; 47,48) Why? – because Their previous baptism was not valid!! (Rom 6:3-6) Acts 19:5-7 (NKJV) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [6] And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. [7] Now the men were about twelve in all.

Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 9 McGarvey "This, then, forces us to the conclusion that they had been immersed with John's immersion after it had ceased to be administered by divine authority. Apollos had been recently preaching this obsolete immersion in Ephesus (Acts 18:24,25), and these persons may have been immersed by him. If so, they submitted to an institution which had been abrogated more than twenty years, and this was the defect that led to their reimmersion." Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 10 Those baptized, but not according to the authority of Jesus Christ, has a need to submit to the Lord's commands and be baptized in the name, (authority) of Jesus Christ. Strong faith and honest convictions, when possessed in error, are not enough to be obedient and pleasing to the Lord. One cannot be taught error pertaining to one’s salvation, (including baptism), believe that error, and then be baptized right.

Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 15 When you were baptized you understood that you were baptized unto the remission of sins, but you didn't know anything about the Lord's church – (Acts 8:12; 1 Cor 12:13; Rom 6:3-6; Gal. 3:26,27) Were the men who Paul met baptized unto the remission of sins? Were they baptized to obey God? Were they sincere when they were baptized? What Question Did Paul Ask Them???
16
Don McClain W.65th St church of Christ / November 12, 2006 16 If you examine yourself and come to the understanding that you were not baptized according to the teachings of Christ, our plea is for you to follow the example of these disciples – Acts 19:5 They didn't hesitate to obey the Lord. They made certain that their baptism was acceptable to the Lord. Are you confident about your baptism? Are you confident enough to risk eternity?
