Romans 7 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.

20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law;

23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

25 Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

The Believer’s Dilemma Romans 6 - 7 Multiple personality disorder? Want to do this, but you do that Say things and wonder where they came from Do things you don’t understand? Believe one thing and do another?

That is the Christian’s dilemma No matter how good we are… We are not congruent Not consistent Even when we are wholeheartedly faithful

Romans 6 baptized baptized into his death buried with him live a new life 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

crucified 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—

10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all… 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

you have been set free holiness eternal life 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

We are forgiven Baptized, buried, resurrected to new life in Christ We are free, holy and have the promise of eternal life with Christ We are alive!

All of this is made possible because we are under a new law The law that declares us righteous through faith in Jesus Christ Jesus severed the ties of death and sin for us on the cross We are under new management

Romans 7 Do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the law— that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.

4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

All of this sounds great Until we come face to face with the reality of being a believer The reality… We are not good at Christian living We are actually pretty bad at it

10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

Here, Paul begins to address our dilemma The law is good But it points out our inconsistencies Our shortcomings Our dilemma as believers

The Apostle Paul does something brilliant here He does not say… You, look at yourselves and your lives Look at your inconsistencies and your failures He says: look at me

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

We can all resonate with Paul Its like we have two personalities One wants to do one thing and the other wants to do another Scripture describes them as warring factions

waging war 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

Thanks be to God— through Jesus Christ our Lord! 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God— through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

We have a hint as to what lies ahead However, we are left waiting for an answer A solution or conclusion There will be none today

Putting it all together We all experience the sense of having multiple personalities We do not make sense even to ourselves This alone should help us to acknowledge our need for God

Putting it all together The more we attempt to live a faithful Christian life Incongruence and inconsistency will become apparent This happens because we have goals, values and a desire to please God

Putting it all together The is no way to be perfectly consistent If being good is our goal we will fail There is a reason there are so many self-help materials We are horrible at control, obedience, consistency and discipline

In sitcoms, in 20 minutes all the problems have been solved In real life, in 20 minutes the problems are bearly exposed We are broken, inconsistent, divided, out of control, undisciplined and disobedient Welcome to life as a Christian
