2  The Summer Olympic games were held in Moscow from 19 July to 3 August 1980.  These were the first Olimpic Games staged in Eastern Europe, in a socialist country.

3 Some events of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games were held in other cities of the Soviet Union: sailing regatta started in Tallinn; preliminary games of the football tournament took place in Kiev, Leningrad and Minsk; shooting competitions were held in Mytishchi, Moscow region. 4 The Games were marked by a US- led boycott: more than 50 countries refused to participate in the Olympics in protest of 1979 Soviet war in Afghanistan. 17 Medal standings  Athletes from 25 countries won Olympic gold.  Representatives of 36 States became the prize-winners of Games. More than a half of all gold medals won athletes from the USSR (80) and the GDR (47).
