2 Meeting Purpose This is a Federally required annual meeting to inform parents of… Our school’s participation in Title I The requirements for using Title I funds and parents’ right to be involved The funds allocated to the school for parent involvement and your right to be involved in how funds will be spent The curriculum and assessments our school uses 2 You should leave the meeting with a clear understanding of being informed about the Title I Program and your rights as Title I Parents!!

3 Title I Program What is “Title I”?  Federal funding provided under No Child Left Behind. Types of Programs:  School wide – serves all students.  Targeted – students identified for the program based on performance on assessments.  Most Milwaukee Schools are categorized as “School-wide”  Our school is : ____________________ 3

4 What does it mean to be a Title I School? Being a Title I school means receiving funding to supplement the school’s existing academic programs. These dollars are used for…  Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards.  Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies  Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers Being a Title I school also means parental involvement and parents’ rights and funds are allocated specifically for: Conducting parental involvement meetings, trainings, and activities

6 Curriculum Our school uses these curricula:  Math:  Reading: …. in order to help the children achieve the State Standards  Wisconsin Common Core Standards www.dpi.wi.gov 6

7 District Assessments Assessments are tests used to help teachers determine if a student is understanding the content presented in the classroom. We use the following assessments for all of our students:  MAPS (K5-3 rd )  Smarter Balanced (3 rd – 8 th ) – new state test as of 2014. 7

8 Proficiency Levels – State Test If a child does not reach a certain proficiency level when they take an assessment, we consider them for additional help from our Title I program. Proficiency Levels:  Advanced: exceeds grade level expectations  Proficient: meets grade level expectations  Basic: performs below grade level expectations  Minimal: performs far below grade level expectations Our goal (and the State’s goal) is for your student to reach at least the “Proficient” level 8

11 Parent’s Rights under NCLB You have a right to: Know the qualifications for you child’s teacher Know if a non-highly Qualified Teacher is placed for four or more weeks Request opportunities to meet regularly with staff for parent involvement Participate in decisions affecting your child Review and contribute to Parent Involvement Plan (part of School Improvement Plan) and Parent Compact Participate in District Advisory Council 11

12 What is a School Improvement Plan (SIP)? The SIP includes:  School Needs Assessment & Summary of Data  Goals and Strategies to Address Academic Needs of Students  Professional Development Needs  Coordination of Resources/Comprehensive Budget  The School’s Parental Involvement Plan. 12 You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in the development of this plan

13 How can I volunteer to assist my student with school needs? Join the School Improvement Team Volunteer to contact other parents regarding important school information. Volunteer in a classroom Chaperone field trips or events Talk to your neighbors and let them know what is going on at your child’s school. Join our PTA or School Governance Council (SGC) Contact _____ at _#__________ to volunteer.
