TEACH GRANT WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW A presentation given by Radford University Financial Aid Office and The College of Education and Human Development

WHAT IS THE TEACH GRANT?? The (TEACH) Grant program provides up to $4,000 per year ($16,000 total for four-year programs) in grants to students who intend to teach full-time in high-need subject areas for at least four years at schools that serve students from low-income families. Graduate students are also eligible for $ 4,000 per year ($ 8,000 total). The first TEACH grants will be awarded during the 2009-2010 Academic Year. (September 1 st, 2009 – May 7 th, 2010)

Student Eligibility Requirements In order for a student to receive a TEACH grant they must; Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do not have to demonstrate financial need. COUNSELING FOR TEACH GRANT Before receiving a TEACH Grant, Federal Regulations require that you complete an Entrance Counseling session. The Entrance Counseling session will provide you with information about the TEACH grant as well as the terms and conditions of a TEACH Grant service agreement. You will also be provided the rights and responsibilities that apply if your TEACH Grant becomes converted to a Direct Loan. You will also be required to complete subsequent counseling each year that you receive the TEACH grant funds. The TEACH grant will also require that you complete an Exit Counseling once you have graduated, left the University, left the TEACH eligible program or dropped below the ½ time status.

Satisfactory Progress For the TEACH grant program, students must maintain a cumulative gpa of at least a 3.25 in addition to meeting the financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. If you stop attending classes (even if you do not officially withdraw from all classes), you will be treated as a withdrawal from the university for financial aid purposes. If you did not complete their TEACH eligible program, this could result in your TEACH grant being converted into a Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

What happens if I change majors / concentrations or do not fulfill the requirements of the service agreement? If you do not fulfill the requirements of the Agreement to Serve you will have all Teach Grant awards converted to Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan that must be repaid, with interest charged from the date when the Teach Grant was disbursed.

Once Financial Aid has reviewed applications, a list of eligible students will be sent to the College of Education and Human Development. Students on that list will be reviewed to determine if they have been admitted to the Teacher Education program and are officially in TEACH Grant eligible program – a must to receive grant. PROCESS
