LCME Self Study Kick Off
2
What is the LCME? Accrediting agency for programs leading to the M.D. degree in the U.S. and Canada Jointly sponsored by the AMA and AAMC 19 member committee (Deans, medical educators, public members, medical students)
3
Importance of Accreditation National process of quality assurance/improvement LCME accreditation establishes eligibility for certain federal grants and student financial aid U.S. students must attend an LCME accredited school to take the USMLE licensure exam Graduates of LCME accredited schools are eligible for ACGME accredited residencies
4
Overall LCME Process DCI (database) completion Self study committees produce reports – Institutional setting – Educational program – Medical students – Faculty – Educational resources
5
Overall LCME Process Independent student analysis Committee reports used by executive committee to compose summary report Site visit LCME makes determination
6
LCME Outcomes Full accreditation (8 years) Shorter term of accreditation Warning of probation Probation Withdrawal of accreditation
7
Increase in Severe Actions In last 100 schools accredited, severe action taken in 56% More than 10 schools on probation in past 8 years Currently 2 schools on probation, 12 with severe actions
8
LCME Standards ~130 accreditation standards Each standard rated – Compliance – Compliance, with need for monitoring – Noncompliance Outcome NOT determined by number of standards out of compliance but rather by which standards, severity, and chronicity
9
More likely to lead to severe action Chronicity ED 8 (comparability between campuses) ED 33 (central curriculum management) ED 35 (evaluation of curriculum), ED 37 (curriculum database) Process not taken seriously/poor documents
10
Our Citations on Last Visit ED-5-A: Active learning: – “opportunities for students to develop skills of self directed, independent learning during the first two years of the curriculum are relatively sparse, with limited occasions for students to interact with faculty individually or in small group settings
11
Our Citations on Last Visit ED 33: central curriculum management – “on those occasions when the dean’s office has made or implemented policies that directly affect the curriculum, there has been no apparent input from the curriculum committee in the decision making nor follow-up to determine the ongoing need for such policies. Directors of third year clerkships do not have the same structural role with respect to the curriculum committee as do course directors in the 1 st and 2 nd year”
12
Our Citations Last Visit MS 37: Adequate study and relaxation space – “Student feedback indicates that there is insufficient study and relaxation space to facilitate their preparations for the academic demands of the curriculum”
13
Our Citations Last Visit ER 9: Affiliation agreements – “The college’s affiliation agreements are not specific regarding the primacy of the medical school on issues of medical student education and do not address the responsibility for treatment and follow-up in case of student exposure to infectious or environmental hazards and occupational injury”
14
Timeline DCI completion by end of October Self study committees meet/write report – November through March Independent student analysis – November through March Summary report written – April through June Final editing of all materials – June & July, 2014 Materials sent to LCME – August, 2014
