MVA 2/3 - Mrs. Varnado’s Class - Week #14 Dear Parents- Our writing is becoming something to really celebrate and I see evidence of more interest and pride in the final drafts produced each month. We have worked to build our writing enthusiasm during in class days and make time to share and celebrate the final drafts that you submit from home. Do make sure to submit all at home daily writing with your work each week and not just the final drafts. Also make sure to mark every work page at the top to show that it has been graded by you and corrected by your child so that the intended learning is mastered and also documented for the audit files. During attendance month #4 I plan to collect a writing sample for the audit file so be sure to submit some writing works in progress so I can select one. If there is one you need back to continue editing, please mark it with a sticky note so I won’t keep that one. What fun we had on this past Wednesday with art, PE, library, and birthday treats for me. Thanks to Mrs. Laky everyone knew it was my birthday. I loved the treats, cards, pictures, and gifts which all helped me to feel really appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving! Bo Varnado Math Tests: Grade 2: Chapter 5 Retest 12/2 Chapter 6 Test 12/9 Grade 3: Saxon Test (lessons 1 –40) 12/4 Harcourt- Unit 4 Test 12/4 Math test retakes are for all students not scoring at least an 80% on the test given the prior week. We work towards mastery so students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery as they review and learn at home. If your child is reviewing for a Harcourt retake, please use the textbook to reteach the concepts that were difficult. Additional practice can be found on the Harcourt website. Second and Third grade test scores went down in general on tests given during the last two weeks. If your child needs a retest, be sure to slow down and reteach the difficult concepts as part of your daily work. Third grade Saxon students, instead of a retest, will be testing with the next test in the program because there is so much embedded review. We can use some more cooking volunteers on 1/14/2015 and beyond. Cooking Volunteers Our Wednesday cooking program is rolling along and we have already had several volunteers. We need one volunteer every other Wednesday to plan out a cooking project to complete with their own child and a small group of classmates. The parent volunteer selects a nutritious recipe, purchase the ingredients, and creates the dish in our school’s cooking kitchen with the help of our students. We all are invited to sample the delicious creation at our AM recess. Hopefully we will have enough Wednesday volunteers to rotate through our class so everyone has a chance to cook at least once. Let me know via email or on the phone if you are able to lead a cooking adventure and please provide a specific date. If you need help with the purchase of ingredients, but would still like to cook, I can send out the ingredient list in advance to see if others might be able to help. We will focus on nutritious eating so please choose appropriate recipes. If you really want to prepare a dessert, please sign up on your child’s birthday or half-birthday week and we can turn it into their celebration. Coming up we have: 12/3 Amanda T. 12/17 Kathy C. 1/14 1/28 Thank you to the volunteers! If you are one that already told me that you want to cook, and have not yet chosen a date, please do so.
