They are called Orphan Trains and they can bring needy children from the east to homes in the west. The purpose of this is to let the children get the things they need. The children that go on the trains are kids who are poor and need help. There is a problem that too many kids in the big cities in the east are roaming around. These children are either orphans or kids who are very poor. The orphan trains have people who care for your children while they are riding on the train. These people are called placing agents. Orphan: I did not know what would happen to me, so I was scared. Reporter: Did you have any siblings that also went on the Train? Orphan: No, I was an only child. I wish I did have siblings. Reporter: When you were on the orphan train did you wish you didn’t have to go on the Orphan Train? Why or why not? Orphan: No, because I was so lonely in New York City I had no friends and no family, so I was so happy when I knew I was going on the Orphan Train. Reporter: Was it scary going on the stage in the meeting house and not knowing who you would go home with or even go home with someone at all? Orphan: I was so scared my face was like a bright red apple. I was wondering to myself “What if no one wanted me or what if my new parents were very mean?” So I was very nervous. Reporter: Did it turn out good for you when you were adopted? Orphan: Yes, my parents are very nice and give me anything I want. Reporter: How old were you when you went on the Orphan Train? 4. I think that the Orphan Train were a good idea because they provided children/ orphans with good clothing, shelter, food, and families. They also provided these orphans with an education. The people who had started the orphan trains were kind enough to make these children feel like they are at their home with their own family and treated them nicely. They also allowed the children choose who they wanted to go with. Also, the families that had adopted these children were very kind and nice to them. They tried very hard to make them feel like they were at home. They had treated the orphans like their own children most of the times.
