Program Structure FOCUS IS THESIS TYPICAL – Years 1-2 – coursework If masters, 2 years enough If not, have to do more prerequisites – Years 3-4 – dissertation thesis Work closely with dissertation advisor, committee STANDARD: publication quality in leading journal

Style of Thesis Single text – Chapter 1: Motivation of the problem – Chapter 2: Literature review Section for each discipline bearing on study – Chapter 3: Formal Statement of problem – Chapter 4: Models (or data gathering) – Chapter 5: Analysis – Chapter 6: Inferences

Supervision/Guidance PROPOSAL (chapters 1-3): – Presented to full committee – Once accepted: Dissertation supervisor is key – Lots of editing, changing – Typically 9 months after proposal Committee helps when asked At defense: – 45 minute presentation to open audience – About 15 minutes open questions (friendly) – About 30 minutes closed questions by committee (more pointed)

Student Funding Ideal is grant support – Rare in business colleges in US Usual is teaching – Student teaches 1 to 3 courses Texas A&M – strict limit of 1 section at a time – Pay pretty well Nebraska – good teachers typically teach 3 – For extra money – Pay very cheap

Support for Student Visits Abroad Travel support from department very low – Texas A&M - $500 per career Usually reserved for interviewing – Nebraska Usually supported by dissertation supervisor Both recognize need to develop resume – Texas A&M – never international trips for students – Nebraska – quite common

Job Market VERY cyclical Now – About as bad as it gets – Economic downturn States lag economy University budgets popular targets Hiring freezes – We have had more post-docs Never saw in business until 21 st century UNL – have had about 2 at a time
