2. Parentheses  Parentheses tell you what to answer first in a number sentence.  Solve the parentheses number expression first and drop the rest of the problem using the order of operations.  Parentheses may be added to a number sentence to make it true.

3. Example 3 + (4 x 2) – 1 3 + 8 – 1 11 – 1 10

4. Nested Parentheses  Nested Parentheses are more than one set of parentheses in a number sentence. *You must have the same number of parentheses facing each other.  Solve the problem by completing the first set of closed parentheses first.

5. Example ((2 + 1 ) 4 ÷ 9) – 1 (3 4 ÷ 9) – 1 (81 ÷ 9) – 1 9 – 1 8
