7.4 Parentheses in Number Sentences SRB pgs. 203-204
2
Parentheses Parentheses tell you what to answer first in a number sentence. Solve the parentheses number expression first and drop the rest of the problem using the order of operations. Parentheses may be added to a number sentence to make it true.
3
Example 3 + (4 x 2) – 1 3 + 8 – 1 11 – 1 10
4
Nested Parentheses Nested Parentheses are more than one set of parentheses in a number sentence. *You must have the same number of parentheses facing each other. Solve the problem by completing the first set of closed parentheses first.
5
Example ((2 + 1 ) 4 ÷ 9) – 1 (3 4 ÷ 9) – 1 (81 ÷ 9) – 1 9 – 1 8
6
Example (4 2 - (3 x 3)) + 1 (4 2 - 9) + 1 (16 - 9) + 1 7 + 1 8
