Pemdas P-parenthesis E-exponents M-multiplication D-division
A-addition S-subtraction By Jason Davis Period 5
2
Each letter Each letter of PEMDAS has a meaning P is for Parentheses E is for Exponents M is for Multiplication D is for Division A is for Addition S is for Subtraction
3
Parentheses First you need to get rid of the parentheses in an equation. To do this you either: Use distributive property: 6(4 x X) = 24 x 6X or Solve the equation inside of the parentheses. (5 + 2) = 7
4
Exponents Next you need to solve your exponents. Do this by multiplying the base number y itself the number of times that the exponent is. 5 = 5 x 5 x 5 = 25 x 5 = 125 3
5
Multiplication Third, you have to multiply. However, division can also go first. It is a matter of which one is closest to the right of an equation. Just multiply the numbers to get the answer. 5 x 5 = 25
6
Division Next you have to divide. However, it does not need to be after multiplication. If there is a multiply sign and a division sign, the first one on the right is the problem you do first. 35 / 7 = 5
7
Addition Next you need to add. However, with addition and subtraction it is the same deal with multiplication and division. Whichever one comes first, is the one you do first = 13
8
Subtraction Next you subtract. Remember, it doesn’t need to be after addition. 8 – 5 = 3
9
How to do it 5(10+5)/(26–23)+3 5*15/3+3 75/3+3 25+3 28
First solve the parentheses. Next multiply Now divide Finally, add And you have your answer!
10
Now you try! Try to do these problems on your own 12(3+4)-8/2 80
8/(6-2)+6(8+4)-37 4(3+6)-2(6-7)/-2 80 71 35
