What is conflict in a story? o Conflict is the tension or problem in the story. o It is a struggle between opposing forces.

External Conflict (just a few examples from The Chosen) o Baseball game: Danny’s Hasidic team from the vs. Reuven’s Orthodox team Danny: “I told my team we were going to kill you apikorsim this afternoon” (23). Mr. Galanter’s battle terminology for the game: “No one sits out this fire fight! Never underestimate the enemy” (16)! Reuven’s eye vs. baseball o World War II - Axis vs. Allies; Jews in Europe persecuted by the Nazis o Zionists vs. Hasidic community; also Reb Saunders vs. Reuven when he mentions Zionism “the words went through me like knives” (187).
