Essay Guidelines Follow the instructions for the essay topic carefully Display your knowledge of the topic and issues in translating/interpreting studies Pay attention to the context in which the translation/interpreting takes place Use information provided during the course unit, and your own reading (provide a bibliography of words cited at the end of your essay)

Essay Guidelines (2) Make sure everything in your essay is relevant to the topic Address the topic explicitly and directly Organize your material in a logical and clear structure Give a title to your essay The basic essay structure is: Introduction, Body, Conclusion Use sub-headings if you wish

Essay Guidelines (3) Group related ideas in the same paragraph and section Your discussion and argumentation should be logical and convincing Ensure clarity of expression Support your ideas with examples Use appropriate terminology

Essay Guidelines (4) Follow bibliographical conventions consistently (MHRA guidelines on intranet ‘Resources’; also essay guidelines for German) Bibliographies for each topic in weekly ppp/handout, plus additional material in the resources section of intranet Data bases for research: Translation Studies Abstracts (TSA), Linguistics & Language Behaviour Abstacts (LLBA), MLA International Bibliography

Criteria for Evaluating Essay School assessment criteria for essays Mark Sheet categories (good mark): 1) Excellent understanding of relevant topics/issues in Translation and Interpreting Studies 2) Firm grasp of key concepts and terminology, and successful application to texts analysed

Criteria cont. 3) Addressing the question set explicitly and directly 4) Logical and effective argument 5) Argument supported effectively with examples 6) Comprehensive and correct referencing 7) Well presented essay and clear writing
