14. + Lab Rotations Purpose: To determine if 1) the lab is a good fit for you and 2) you are a good fit for the lab Overview Required three 5-week Rotations (2 in Fall, 1 in Spring year 1) At the end of each you will give 1) a presentation 2) submit a “publication worthy” report At the end of Rotation 3, you will join a lab If you do not find a lab by Rotation 3 you will do a Fourth Please Note! 34. + Mentor Selection IDP online database (Faculty) Entire listing of all UF faculty with IDP affiliations Can be accessed through each concentration link IDP online database (Grants) Allows you to search for each faculty members funding Gives a rough idea if they have the financial support to take on a student Multiple methods to finding a mentor Contact PI Directly or get in touch with their students Best way to find out if they are accepting students is to ask them directly (websites may be outdated) Talking with other grad students can also give you good insight into available PI’s

35. + Importance of your rotations and mentor selection You are not only judging a lab while your rotate, but you are being judged. Take it seriously, do your best work. Things to consider when choosing a mentor: Funding, publication record, current laboratory personnel, number of graduated students, current time at UF, personal relationship, availability… Its important to know that you have the right to interview your new mentor as much as they have the right to interview you. Don’t be afraid to speak up and talk about what YOU want out of your graduate and future career
