IGCSE from 2009 www.edexcel.com/igcse2009 Key features of IGCSE Science 2009 IGCSE recognised as equivalent, grade for grade to GCSE Improved specification design Familiar content, revised for consistent demand across sciences No coursework: investigative skills assessed through examination Assessment is easy: linear and single tier Includes aspects of recent scientific advances Excellent progression to GCE AS and A level

IGCSE from 2009 www.edexcel.com/igcse2009 What is available? Within science, the following IGCSEs are available: IGCSE Biology IGCSE Chemistry IGCSE Physics IGCSE Science (Double Award) IGCSE Human Biology

IGCSE from 2009 www.edexcel.com/igcse2009 Biology 1 Biology 2 Physics 1 Chemistry 1 Chemistry 2 Physics 2 IGCSE Biology IGCSE Physics IGCSE Chemistry IGCSE Double Award Science Essentially, “core” for Paper 1 and “extension” for Paper 2

IGCSE from 2009 www.edexcel.com/igcse2009 Assessment summary Paper 1 lasts two hours and is worth 120 marks (all specification content except the bold statements) Paper 2 lasts one hour and is worth 60 marks. (all specification content) Papers contain balance of questions, with 20% being AO3 (Investigative Skills)
6
IGCSE from 2009 www.edexcel.com/igcse2009 Subject content Broadly similar to the pre-2006 GCSE courses Content is well-defined in the specification Some practical work is outlined in the specification – candidates should have an appreciation of these experiments Extension material for separate sciences embedded across the specification – not separate extension units

IGCSE from 2009 www.edexcel.com/igcse2009 Subject content Biology - comparison of plant and human biology and function; ecology; inheritance and use of biology in GM, cloning… Chemistry - structure, bonding, Groups 1 & 7, calculations, tests for ions & gases, organic and industrial chemistry (NO geology) Physics - forces & motion, basic astronomy, electricity, light and sound waves, energy, magnetism and radiation
