The primary areas of repair in this restoration were the fusee, mainspring barrel, fusee chain, cannon pinion and balance staff. All of this work had to be done by hand with antique tools. In the oldest fusee watches, the fusee was controlled by cat gut. In the finest fusee watches, a very small chain was made by hand. Each link is made up of three figure “8” plates, riveted together. The Yates fusee needed several links and the barrel end hook remade. Several hundred links make up the chain. As found, the mainspring barrel cover would not stay in place. Some very crude repairs had been attempted in the past. Instead of making a new barrel and cover, I used antique tools meant to tighten the barrel properly. At this point in the reassembly, we found that one screw hole and one pin hole were to worn. However, we did not have any tool that would come close to closing these holes. When doing antique restoration work, it is often necessary to fabricate a tool for a specific task. Remember that the original builder of this watch made most of his own tools.
