IDENTIFICATION l The quickest way to ID a Trans is by the shape of the oil pan (see Fig. 3-1). l For oil pan ID see pages 39 - 49 of your NAPA catalog. l To decipher tag #’s see page 27 - 38 of your NAPA catalog. Page 29

DIAGNOSTICS l Is the problem: –Hydraulic, Mechanical, Electronic l Or is the problem engine related? –Poor engine performance –Low engine vacuum. Page 32

FLUID CHECK l First Check Fluid Level. –Check dip stick for type of fluid. –Any special instructions. l Vehicle Level l Normal operating temperature. Page 34

FLUID CHANGES l A transmission service should include: –Changing oil filter, –Oilpan gasket, –Adjust Bands, –Adjust TV linkage or Cable, –Check Modulator, –Adjust Manual linkage. Page 34

FLUID LEAKS l External leaks: –Front pump seal –Front pump O’ring –Cooler lines –Manual shaft seal –Speedometer driven gear and adapter –Oil pan gasket –Rear seal Page 38

MODULATOR l Modulator should hold vacuum for 1 minute with out leaking down. l No fluid should come from vacuum nipple. Page 46
