4 A six-week series that aims to increase food access for Rhode Island’s elderly population www.farmfreshri.org HEALTHY SERVINGS FOR SENIORS Education + Tastings + Financial Incentives Participants engage in interactive lessons and tastings Cooking demos provide insight into recipes, food safety, and food preparation Seniors who attend 4 out of 6 sessions get $15 to buy local fruits and vegetables Strategy for success:

12 In 2009, due to demand by school food purchasers, Schartner Farms in Exeter, RI increased production of this crop by 60,000 pounds. When schools did not purchase the entire crop, the farmer listed it for the first time on “Market Mobile”, a local food distribution catalog. Market Mobile customers immediately bought all of it. The vegetable has since become so popular that production has increased steadily each year. This vegetable is now listed year round on Market Mobile, and available through three other produce vendors used by RI schools, hospitals, universities and senior centers. What is the vegetable?
