We are a Rhode Island based consortium of non-profit organizations dedicated to working collaboratively to develop and deliver shared technology solutions Members include: every institution of Higher Ed in RI 4 Hospitals RI Courts, Secretary of State, RI Division of IT RINET  K-12, Public libraries, Municipal Government We Connect People and Information

6 Our Process How we have approached providing students with access to legal online entertainment services We had great interest from our members about solving this collectively Cost was always a roadblock -- nobody wanted to pay

7 Our Process, Cont’d The process for making a decision or getting to our current position OSHEAN had been in conversation with several service providers, including Ruckus Ruckus’ new ad-based model, and the ability to install the caching server at the OSHEAN core was appealing The ability to combine the subscriptions of several member institutions to reach the 3000 minimum allowed smaller schools to join One member did decline, because of concerns with social networking feature of Ruckus Marketing assistance – emails, post cards, banners

12 Costs of Piracy The major US motion picture studios lost $6.1 billion in 2005 to piracy worldwide 80% of those losses resulted from piracy overseas, 20% from piracy in the US. 62% of the $6.1 billion loss resulted from piracy of hard goods such as DVDs, 38% from internet piracy. Piracy rates are the highest in China (90%), Russia (79%) and Thailand (79%). The worldwide motion picture industry, including foreign and domestic producers, distributors, theaters, video stores and pay- per-view operators, lost $18.2 billion in 2005 as a result of piracy. The typical pirate is a male aged 16-24. 44% of MPA company losses in the US are attributable to college students.
