Initial Ideas on Purpose of Paper To express an understanding of the general needs of the user communities that are developing portals to GEOSS services To explain the way the GCI can address those needs To instruct and assist portal developers in utilizing the GCI components To engage the various user communities in sustaining and enhancing GEOSS capabilities To leverage community resources of the GEOSS Information System in addressing access, processing and workflow capabilities

Discussions on Purpose and Scope Paper should include community needs/requirements independent of GEOSS architecture Paper should address a variety of use cases for community interactions with GEOSS –Multiple community portal types –User clients and helper applications Communities will want to access GEOSS and non-GEOSS resources Paper should describe and benefit from previous experience of AIPs and other efforts Recommendations are non-binding but paper should describe benefits of compliance IN-03 consolidated requirements for GEO Web Portal will be translated to recommendations as appropriate

8. Discussion of Use Cases Paper will use full description of GEOSS architecture to set context but use cases will consider subsequent evolution and be based on implemented components Use cases will present generalized Community Portal types based on existing or planned capabilities of various groups Recommendations will be developed to maximize the benefit of each portal type to both the target community and the GEOSS user community at large
