2 Introduction There is a wealth of information on sustainable business available from government agencies, NGOs, research institutions, and other bodies. However, it can be difficult for a beginner to sort through all this information and get a basic introduction to the subject. This training is meant to do just that—to be an introduction to the topic of environmental sustainability in manufacturing. 2

3 Purpose This training will – introduce you to the topic of environmental sustainability in manufacturing, – Illustrate its relationship to business competitiveness, and – Explain how to begin implementing sustainable practices in your company. You will find links to more in-depth information throughout the training modules. We also encourage you to use the additional resources and guides available through the Sustainable Business Clearinghouse. Sustainable Business Clearinghouse 3

5 Who Should Use this Training? This training is designed to be an introduction to sustainable manufacturing principles and practices for anyone in your organization since involving all employees is critical to a successful sustainability program. You can view the module in whole or in part and can be used as a reference after completion. We designed specific lessons for different audiences. For example, those in management or finance may be interested in the lesson entitled Deciding on, Financing, and Implementing Project, while practitioners on the shop floor may be more interested in the practical suggestions in the lesson on finding opportunities for improvement. 5
