3
9 steps to 2008 1.Back up the Source Server 2.Install the most recent service packs 3.Verify the network configuration 4.Raise the functional level of the Active Directory domain and forest 5.Evaluate the health of the Source Server 6.Optimize Exchange Server and mailboxes 7.Synchronize the Source Server time with an external time source 8.Run the Migration Preparation Tool 9.Plan to migrate line-of-business applications
4
Backup Server You’re already doing this everyday
5
Install most recent Service Packs You’re doing this already too
6
Verify the network configuration Would be ‘reconfigure’ network for most SBS 2003 servers Disable 2 nd network interface Reconfigure router Set address to 192.168.x.1 Run CEIC Wizard Disable VPN
7
Raise functional levels Raise domain functional level Raise forest functional level
8
Evaluate Server Health Run SBS 2003 BPA Fix issues Important step. Don’t disregard this. Problems are guaranteed if you do.
9
Optimize Exchange Really Exchange housekeeping Delete unwanted emails Archive older emails On most servers, the Exchange migration will be the longest process (up to several days, depending on mailbox size)
10
Run the migration preparation tool Sourcetool Ugrades schema Provide licensing support Exchange migration mode Create an answer file Restart server Potential problem step: Verify the pre-requisites (service packs and BPA) to avoid problems Tip: If you are logged on as an Administrator equivalent, make your account a member of Enterprise Admins, Schema Admins and Domain Admins before you run SourceTool or log on as Administrator
11
Plan to migrate LOB apps Application data can be migrated but not applications themselves
12
Creating an answer file Source Server Clock and time zone settings Company Information Source server domain administrator account name and password Name Domain name Server ip address Server default gateway DHCP is running Destination Server Name Server ip address
13
Install SBS 2008 in Migration Mode SBS installed and configured as destination server Destination server joined to existing domain (both servers can live for 21 days) Operations master ( flexible single master operations / FSMO) are transferred to Destination server Destination server becomes global catalog server Destination server becomes site licensing server DHCP is installed and configured on destination server Ensure DHCP is turned off on the router
14
Migrate settings and data Folder redirection – move to a drive other than C: by means of GPO Start Migration Wizard
15
Migration Wizard Change where to store data on the destination server Configure the network Configure the internet address (OWA unavailable until migration finishes) Migrate network settings Migrate Exchange mailboxes Remove legacy group policy objects Migrate users’ shared data Migrate Companyweb Migrate fax data Migrate user accounts and group Enable folder redirection Migrate SQL data Migrate Terminal Server licensing server Finish Migration
16
Change where to store data Performance optimization (sample) 3 volumes 1 st volume holds OS only 2 nd volume holds Exchange data only 3 rd volume holds user data and WSUS This configuration makes RAID 5 interesting on most SBS level servers
17
Migrating Exchange Mailbox process is simple but takes a very long time (25Gb in 10 hours) Public folders are migrated by replication Pay close attention to documentation, as this is a common failure point Demoting and decommissioning Common failure point if Exchange is not decommissioned properly on source server
18
Group policy objects Do not delete the 2008 GPOs They have similar names to 2003 GPOs You have to delete some 2003 GPOs Be careful
19
Migrating Companyweb You are prompted for primary and secondary administrator accounts You must use the source server account details for the primary account, else migration will fail – use Administrator Primary account will not exist on destination server – no Administrator on destination server Migration process creates OldCompanyweb from source server OldCompanyweb can be run on destination server in addition to new Companyweb Potential problem with transferring documents. Keep OldCompanyweb for a while.
