A change in power… In 1832, Santa Anna overthrew the Mexican government and became the new president of Mexico This excited the Texas colonists as they were led to believe that Santa Anna was in favor of states rights However, the colonists would soon learn that this was not the case.

While in Mexico City, a couple of things happened:
Convention of 1832 After the convention of 1832 SFA went to Mexico City to deliver the colonists requests While in Mexico City, a couple of things happened: SFA is forced to wait to have his voice heard by the Mexican Government Colonists drafted a constitution at the Convention of 1833 calling for the independent Mexican-state of Texas SFA writes a letter telling colonists to create a new government for the independent Mexican State of Texas.

However Santa Anna rejected the idea of the independent state of Texas
SFA Arrested Eventually SFA met with Santa Anna and Santa Anna agreed to make changes: Let Americans come back to Texas Fairer taxes on goods from U.S. However Santa Anna rejected the idea of the independent state of Texas Shortly after leaving Mexico City, SFA was stopped by Mexican police The police had intercepted SFA’s letter to the colonists SFA was charged with treason and spent the next year in a Mexican jail
