French & Indian War Britain and France were fighting over land.

French & Indian Relations French were interested in trade. Got along with Native Americans. Trade led to military alliances.

Problems of Victory: Land Proclamation of 1763 – Settlers could not go beyond the Appalachians Mountains. WHY? Native Americans were angry over losing control of land. Britain wanted to avoid more conflict w/Natives.

Problems of Victory: Debt Britain had a lot of debt from the war. They placed new taxes on colonists. – They felt the colonists should pay since it was on their soil. – Ex: Stamp Act – required people to buy an official seal to place on documents. Quartering Act – required colonists to house and provide for soldiers even after the war. – Many soldiers were there to enforce new taxes.

Boston Massacre Colonists were upset with the Quartering Act. They did not like presence of British soldiers. – Often taunted them Soldiers fired into a rioting crowd. 5 civilians died.

Boston Tea Party Britain had a monopoly on tea. They taxed it heavily. – “No taxation without representation” In protest, colonists threw British tea into the Boston Harbor.
