6 REGISTRATION  I visited each middle school to distribute and explain the Program of Studies to all rising freshmen.  Rising 9 th graders will register for next year’s courses with the assistance of their middle school counselors.  If you need to make any course request changes after submitting your initial requests, please contact the RCHS Counseling Office.

12 MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT  May include: World History/Geography I, Algebra I, Keyboarding Secondary, Computer Applications, Introduction to Drafting and Technology, Agriculture I, Introduction to Trades, Individual Development, and any World Language Course  If you wish to have this course removed from your transcript and GPA, you must do so BEFORE ENTERING HIGH SCHOOL IN THE FALL OF 2014.  Forms are available in the school counseling offices at both middle schools and RCHS.

13 SUMMER SCHOOL 2014  Health/PE 9  June 23—July 31; Monday—Thursday, 8:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m.  No Bus Transportation!  Fee: $125, payment due with registration  Registration Deadline: Tuesday, April 15  ALL REGISTRATION FORMS & PAYMENT MUST BE TURNED IN TO RCHS  70 spots available; if more than 70 students register, there will be a lottery

15 ENGLISH English 9 Foundations Fundamental course which develops  reading, writing, speaking, organizing, and listening skills English 9 Critical course which develops  reading and writing analytical skills  speaking and listening skills  organization and research skills  vocabulary and grammar study

16 ENGLISH English 9 Honors Advanced academic course requiring:  Self-discipline, motivation, a superior work ethic, and a strong desire to learn  Solid knowledge of literary and grammatical conventions  A desire to cultivate close reading skills in order to identify, assess, and analyze literary elements, mood, tone, purpose, and thematic content in a variety of genres  A desire to learn, understand, and implement all components of the writing process in both informal and formal writing assignments  Collaboration and oral presentations  Summer reading assignment

17 HISTORY & SOCIAL SCIENCES WORLD HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY II  All Freshmen!  Covers World History from 1500 until the present  Fast-paced!  REQUIRES READING TEXTBOOK, PRIMARY SOURCES, AND OTHER HISTORY RESEARCH  REQUIRES STUDY OUTSIDE OF CLASS  REQUIRES RESEARCH AND WRITING  SOL COURSE: GETTING VERIFIED CREDIT = PASSING THE COURSE + PASSING THE SOL TEST

20 EXTRA HELP  Math teachers are available for help before school and after school.  Go to the math lab during school.  W&L offers free tutoring after schools in the Library.  Private tutors can be recommended by your guidance counselor.

21 SCIENCE - 9 TH GRADE EARTH SCIENCE  Foundation for most of the science courses offered  Emphasis on the dynamic changes Earth undergoes  Earth’s features, processes and placement in the universe  Instruction in the areas of: astronomy, meteorology, geology, ecology, and oceanography Chemistry Biology Physics

22 EARTH SCIENCE HONORS  Accelerated course  Examines Earth Science subjects in more detail and depth  More rigorous tests, projects  Extended reading and writing assignments

23 HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION  PE/Health 9  1 Week of PE  1 Week of Health  Grade is 50% PE, 50% Health  Summer School PE/Health 9  6 Weeks Long  2 hours of PE & 2 hours of Health each day  Activity Log (50 extra hours outside of class)  $125  70 spots (selected by lottery if more sign up)  See Guidance Department to sign up
