I MPERFECT T ENSE

Imperfect The imperfect is one of two indicative past tenses The imperfect is used for ongoing, repetitive, or in- progress, actions occurring in the past (even if they also continue into the present) The imperfect best represents “was …ing” or “used to …” The other indicative past tense, the preterite, is used for simple completed actions and represents “…ed”

Imperfect Tense The conjugation method is same as present tense – Identify type of infinitive (-AR, -ER, -IR) – Drop the last two letters from infinitive – Add the endings that correspond to the subject ARER / IR abaábamosíaíamos abasabaisíasíais abaabaníaían

Imperfect Tense (Irregular) There are three irregular imperfect forms IR ibaíbamos ibasibais ibaiban SER eraéramos eraserais eraeran VER veíaveíamos veíasveíais veíaveían

Imperfect v. Preterite Some examples: – Ayer llovía It was raining yesterday (imp.) – Ayer llovió It rained yesterday (pret.) – Yo almorzaba (imp.) cuando tú llamaste (pret.).
