BRAIN-BASED LEARNING MEETING THE NEEDS OF ALL LEARNERS: Archdiocese of Dubuque Technology Curriculum Leaders 2011-2012 *An internet connection will be necessary to visit the links included in this PPT. NEXT

In Trail 2 of the Archdiocese TCL program, you'll be learning about the brain. But what do you already know? Click on the link below for a quick test of your prior knowledge. National Geographic Brain Quiz *The quiz will open in a new window. When you are finished, close the window and return to this Google Docs PPT. NEXT
3
So... how did you do? During the coming year, you'll be learning a bit about the anatomy and physiology of the brain. What you learn about the structures within the brain and how they work, will help you to understand how learning actually occurs. NEXT
4
You will learn how the brain receives, processes, stores and retrieves information. Once you have a basic understanding of this, you'll be more likely to understand why some instructional strategies are more "brain-compatible" than others. NEXT

Here’s a brief clip that will set the stage for this year’s Brain-Based Learning class. Just click on the picture below. *When finished, close the You Tube window and return to this PPT. NEXT

One thing I'm certain you've heard is that exercising the brain is every bit as important as exercising the body. I've linked to a few "brain games" for you to try. They'll be good for your brain, and may benefit your students' brains, as well. Spatial Recall Game: “ Memory Matrix” Response Inhibition Game : “Color Match” Verbal Fluency Game “Word Bubbles” *Each of these links will take you to the Lumosity Website. By creating an account, you will be given free access to a few of the games available on the site. The games I’ve linked to above are several of the FREE games that are available on the website. Of course, they’ll give you an opportunity to pay for full access to all games- but that is NOT necessary in order to sample the games above. After playing each game, close the window and return to this PPT. NEXT

I'm looking forward to meeting and getting to know each of you. To find out a few things about ME before our first class, click on the link below. NEXT www.motivationforlearning.com *When finished, close my website and return to this PPT.

Feel free to explore the Wikispace that I created specifically for our 2011-2012 Brain-Based Learning class. This will be your “one stop shop” for receiving and sharing information related to our class. Here you will find information about assignments, and how to post them to the site as you complete them. You’ll be able to see the work of your classmates, and hopefully get some good ideas from them. The Wiki will also allow us to communicate with one another between sessions. Click on this link to explore our BBL Wiki now. Sign-in by clicking on “Participants 2011-12.” Then click on EDIT, and add your name to the list that begins with MY name. NEXT

Thanks for playing around with this intro to Brain-Based Learning. I’m looking forward to meeting you next week, & beginning what I know will be another great year with the TCL program. Julie Crotty I LOVE teaching about- & continuing to learn about- the human brain! My hope is that your participation in Brain-Based Learning will spark your own interest in & curiosity about the brain. The ultimate goal is to better understand the students in our classrooms, so that we can teach in ways that take advantage of how their brains learn. See you soon!
