Poem by: Ingrid de Kok The Head of the Household By: Britney saysouly, karly behl, & Hunter blommer

T - Title We think it’ll be about the man of the house who is in charge of everything.

P - Paraphrase Translating it in our own words we think would be about a thirteen year old girl suffering about taking care of her kids at such a young age and doesn’t have enough food, money, and shelter to survive.

C - Connotation We read in the poem where they described the gulls by saying they’re moulting. “Left-overs, moulting gulls…” Another word we came across that we didn’t know is spoor. It means: the trail left by a person or animal. The root word moult means: cast off hair, skin, horn, or feathers. Imagery: “Moon and bone-cold stars..” Ironic: The head of the household is a thirteen year old girl.

A - Attitude The speakers attitude is miserable because she’s explaining on how she is taking care of all her kids at just thirteen years old. The poets attitude is warm hearted because she’s exaggerating the story and making it seem a lot worse than it might be and it makes you feel bad for the girl in the poem.

S - Shifts At the beginning of the story she was obviously alive and frustrated because she had to raise all her kids at the age of thirteen. At the end, we thought she died. Because some people were coming to get all the dead people, and they included in the list, a thirteen year old girl.

T - Title We were on the same track and somewhat right. It wasn’t about the man of the household though, it was about a girl suffering to raise all her kids at such a young age and it explains on how it’s a lot harder than it seems and takes more responsibility than people think.

T - Theme We think the theme of the poem is that no matter on how bad the situation you are in, you should be strong and confident and never give up and keep trying until you meet your goal or destination your going for.
