1 Abstract During this project, we were faced with the challenge of creating and designing a green dorm in East Halls of Penn State University. In order to do so, we attended a green dorm seminar. While brainstorming, we kept in mind the consumer, worker, investor, and most importantly Earth. We learned that Earth was one of the most important “investors” with regards to our project. We also developed a greater understanding of sustainability, which is the ability for us to live the way we live without compromising the needs of future generations. Sustainable living is important because we do not want to deplete the Earth’s resources in the near future. In fact, we want to reverse this process and help the earth replenish its resources. With all this in mind, we have decided to renovate and redesign showers in the East Halls. When doing so, we will keep in mind efficiency and the conservation of energy and water. We hope this will bring Penn State University one step closer to becoming an eco-friendly campus so that we can preserve it for future generations. EMS Charts Conclusion During this project, we were challenged with designing an energy and water retentive public restroom that also possessed aesthetic appeal. We were given an older version of the restroom and decided to work on top of the old design to save construction and renovation costs. The previous bathroom contained ordinary toilets (non- dual flush), small cramped showers with immobile high pressure overhead showers, and manual faucets. With respect to toilets, we implemented a dual-flush toilet. This toilet possesses two different water pressure capabilities for different cleaning needs. This would help conserve a lot of water that was originally being unnecessarily used. Furthermore, we increased the shower size to make it more comfortable and less claustrophobic. In addition to this, we implemented detachable showerheads, and automatic faucets. I believe our design has fully met our customer needs as we have added lockers and a full length mirror to the public restroom. AHP Chart Redesign Dorm Dimensions 1 1. Therefore, the average person flushes 65 cents per day, $4.55 per week and about $20 per month. Therefore getting a dual flush toilet can cut that bill like you said by almost 67%. 2.Our toilets on average use one gallon per flush as opposed to five gallons for a normal toilet. This saves 20 gallons of water per day, and 7,000 gallons of water per year. Low Flow Showerhead 3.Low-flow fixtures cut water usage in half. Meaning if you take a 5-minute shower you can save approximately 4,550 gallons of water each year, or enough to fill a 15-foot aboveground swimming pool. Just imagine if everyone made the switch.
