Impact of the Counter-Reformation
4
The lines between Protestant and Catholic areas were sharply drawn by 1600. Protestant: England Scotland Scandinavia northern Germany Catholic: Italy France Spain Ireland southern Germany
5
The Catholic Church tried to prevent the spread of Protestant ideas by reviving the Inquisition. The Church also published the Index, a list of books Catholics were forbidden to read.
6
In sum... The Counter-Reformation did not stop the spread of Protestantism, nor re-claim any lost followers It did reform, reorganize and re-energize the Church – Catholicism would continue to grow with the Spanish exploration of the Americas and the missionary work of the Jesuits
7
Thesis Workshop Historical evidence is rarely absolute Counter-examples will and do exist Your job as a historian is to make judgments based on the majority of evidence Try to anticipate counter-arguments – Example claim: All 9 th graders are wonderful kids. – Counter-Argument: Jimmy is a 9 th grader who stole a car – Revised claim: While one 9 th grader did steal a car, the vast majority of 9 th graders are wonderful kids.
8
Brainstorm With your partner, think of some reasons that would support the following claims: – The Counter-Reformation was effective in counteracting the Protestant Reformation – The Counter-Reformation was ineffective in counteracting the Protestant Reformation
