Introduction to Engineering Dimensioning - 3 Agenda Dimensioning cylinders and cones Locating holes and other features General guidelines
2
Dimensioning Basic Shapes -Simple Shapes Cylinders Positive (solid) Negative (hole) Φ means diameter
3
Dimensioning Basic Shapes -Simple Shapes Cone 36.4°
4
Frustum Dimensioning Basic Shapes -Simple Shapes
5
Dimensioning Shows A) Size & B) Location and Orientation Size Location & Orientation When locating a hole, or positive cylinder, dimension to the center line (See B & C above)
6
Principles of Good Dimensioning (Table 4.1 ) The overriding principle of dimensioning is CLARITY Principles – not an infallible rule set, need to apply good judgment.
7
Some General Guidelines – Clarity is the goal. Place Dimension in view that most clearly describes feature Preferred Avoid
8
Some General Guidelines – Clarity is the goal. Dimension Outside of View Avoid Good Practice
9
Some General Guidelines Start by dimensioning basic outside dimensions of the object. Add dimension for location and size of removed features Add general and specific notes – such as tolerances
10
Practice Problem 1 – Assume block is 2 in square and hole is 1 in diameter Size: Ht, Wt, Depth, Hole Dia. Location: Center of Hole * There is a full-page reproduction following the lecture notes for your use.
