Honors Geometry Section 7.4 Surface Area & Volume of Cylinders
2
A cylinder can be seen as a prism with a circle for the base instead of a polygon. Instead of individual lateral faces, a cylinder has one continuous lateral face.
3
The *axis of a cylinder is the segment joining the centers of the two bases. If the axis of the cylinder is perpendicular to the bases, then the cylinder is a right cylinder. If not, the cylinder is an oblique cylinder.
4
The altitude of a cylinder is defined in the same way as it was for a prism.
5
The formulas for lateral area, surface area and volume for a cylinder are very similar to those of a prism.

Example 1: A penny is a right cylinder with a diameter of mm and a thickness of 1.55 mm. Ignoring the raised design, what is the surface area and volume of a penny?
