Physics Exploring Newton’s Laws of Motion
2
Newton’s First Law of Motion Inertia A body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. A body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. A body persists its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.
3
Newton’s Second Law F=ma The amount of force, F, is directly proportional to the product of the object’s mass, m, and its acceleration, a. Force is measured in Newtons 1 Newton = 1 (kg*m)/s 2 The net external force on a body will cause it to accelerate in the direction in which the force is acting.
4
Newton’s Third Law The law of interaction. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Whenever one body exerts a force on second body, the second body must exert a force on the first body that is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.
5
Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion Review 1 st Law – Inertia 2 nd Law – F = ma 3 rd Law – For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
