Physics Exploring Newton’s Laws of Motion

Newton’s First Law of Motion  Inertia  A body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.  A body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.  A body persists its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.

Newton’s Second Law  F=ma  The amount of force, F, is directly proportional to the product of the object’s mass, m, and its acceleration, a.  Force is measured in Newtons  1 Newton = 1 (kg*m)/s 2  The net external force on a body will cause it to accelerate in the direction in which the force is acting.

Newton’s Third Law  The law of interaction.  For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Whenever one body exerts a force on second body, the second body must exert a force on the first body that is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.

Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion Review  1 st Law – Inertia  2 nd Law – F = ma  3 rd Law – For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
