/CNEN It occupies an area of 146.000m 2, in the Campus of the UFRJ, being 18.028m 2 of constructed area.
4
Main Activities Areas: Reactors Cornerstone of the Institute, the research reactor Argonauta is nowadays one of IEN's installations designed for experimental activities in physics and reactor engineering. Together with the nuclear and thermohydraulic measurement laboratories, it is used for the development of new applications in nuclear techniques; in supporting technical studies for the project, license and operation of nuclear installations, in the irradiation and sample analysis, as well as in personnel training, with post-graduate and specialization courses.
5
Instrumentation and Human Reliability IEN has developed more that 20 prototypes of spectrometry, radiation protection and nuclear medicine equipment during this period. The activities related to human reliability started with the Laboratório de Interfaces Homem/Sistema - LABIHS (Human/System Interface Laboratory), an installation that simulates the processes and the working environment in a nuclear plant control room.
6
Chemistry and Nuclear Materials The research, development and services related to chemistry conducted by IEN include the following activities: chemical and metallurgical processes, environmental technology, chemical analysis and material tests. The development of methodologies that use ultrasound techniques to evaluate residual tension in structures/components of nuclear reactors and others, as well as the efficiency of the measures taken to decrease tension, is an example of how advanced IEN is in the material characterization field.
