German Level B1 LISTENING COMPREHENSION

The audio file selected for the listening exercise is a podcast for learning German by a native German speaker on the topic of “Denglish”. The 5 min audio file on “Denglish” is about how the German language appropriates many words from English, as well as other languages. PODCAST – SLOW GERMAN

The goal is two-fold – to help the students understand an authentic text spoken by a native German speaker. to point them in the direction of the vast resources for learning German that exist online to enable self-study. GOALS

Begin with discussion on the various foreign words there are in English. Make a list of these words on the black board. For example: Kindergarten, Guru, Wanderlust, Zeitgeist, Chai, deja-vu The aim is to get the students to think critically about how languages borrow from each other. STEP 1: SETTING THE CONTEXT

Introduce the concept of ‘Denglisch” Brainstorm with the students and create a list of Anglicisms in German that they already know. For example: Meeting gecancelled geposted Laptop STEP 2: PRE-LISTENING EXERCISE

Listen to the text for the final time and fill in the missing verbs. Seid Ihr jetzt komplett verwirrt? Müsst Ihr nicht sein. Denn jede Sprache ist ein Gemisch aus verschiedenen Einflüssen. The teacher writes some questions on the board and the students form pairs and ask each other those questions. Sample questions – Wer ist auf Facebook? Hast du ein Twitterkonto? The aim is to introduce the idea of using social media such as podcasts, facebook groups to aid language learning. STEP 4: POST LISTENING EXERCISE

The teachers share with the class the link to the podcast online along with the complete text. Students make their own podcast on a topic of their interest. The podcasts includes at least 5 sentences and will be a test of their pronunciation and sentence construction.
