WALT: Talk about the past with leisure phrases, the verb “avoir” and time expressions. WILF: To be able to recognise when a phrase is in the past tense for a C grade level. In the past tense, there is a subject, an auxiliary verb and a past participle. J’ai joué au football subject auxiliary verb past participle (Je) (ai) (joué)

The auxiliary verb (the helping verb) is usually “avoir” which means “to have”. Copy the following in to your books. J’AI TU AS IL / ELLE A NOUS AVONS VOUS AVEZ ILS / ELLES ONT I HAVE YOU HAVE HE/SHE HAS WE HAVE YOU HAVE THEY HAVE ON A ONE HAS

PAST PARTICIPLES Mostly, past participles end in one of three possibilities… é i u For example… joué = played fini = finished vendu = sold So to identify a phrase in the past tense, look for a part of “avoir” and a “past participle”.
