2 L’Usage des articles indéfinis o Indefinite articles are used when you are not talking about a specific item. In English we use a, an, or some while in French we use un, une, or des. - un – used for masculine words - une – used for feminine words - des – used for plural words (no matter if they are masculine for feminine)

3 Des exemples o a boy – un garçon o a pen – un stylo o a girl – une fille o a chair – une chaise o some gentlemen – des messieurs o some hamburgers – des hamburgers o some ladies – des mesdames o some pizzas – des pizzas

4 L’Usage des articles définis o Definite articles are used when you are talking about specific items. In English we use the while in French we use le, la, l’ or les. - le – used for masculine singular words - la – used for feminine singular words - l’ – used for singular words that start with a vowel - les – used for plural words (no matter if they are masculine for feminine)

5 Des exemples o the boy – le garçon o the pen – le stylo o the girl – la fille o the chair – la chaise o the computer – l’ordinateur o the gentlemen – les messieurs o the hamburgers – les hamburgers o the ladies – les mesdames o the pizzas – les pizzas

6 Souvenez que… o Remember that there is no way to know if a noun is masculine or feminine. You just have to memorize the article along with the noun. o Remember also that if a noun begins with a vowel, you will need to link the article with the first letter of the noun. Whether it is with an l’, un, une, des, les.

7 Les Adjectifs Possessifs  Possessive adjectives are words describing that someone owns/has a relation to an object/being.  First, you need to see who is owning the item, then see if the item is masculine, feminine, or plural.  After finding the owner and the gender, you then choose the corresponding possessive adjective.

8 Les Adjectifs Possessifs  Here are the possessive adjectives for each of the singular “owners”: subjectmasculine feminine plural pronoun je mon ma mes tu ton ta tes il/elle/on son sa ses

9 Les Adjectifs Possessifs  Here are the possessive adjectives for each of the plural “owners”: subject singular plural pronoun nous notrenos vous votrevos ils/elles leurleurs

10 Des Exemples  Je – since je means I the mon, ma, and mes mean my. J’ai mon livre. (I have my book.) Il a mon papier. (He has my paper.)  Tu – since tu means you (s.) the ton, ta, tes mean your. Tu as tes cahiers? (Do you have your notebooks?) Elles ont ton livre. (They have your book.)

11 Des Exemples  Il – since il means he the son, sa, and ses mean his. Il a son crayon. (He has his pencil.) Ils ont sa pizza. (They have his pizza.)  Elle – since elle means she the son, sa, ses mean her. Elle a ses stylos. (She has her pens.) Tu as son prof. (You have her teacher.)

12 Des Exemples  Nous – since nous means we the notre and nos mean our. Nous avons nos livres. (We have our books.) J’ai notre cahier. (I have our notebook.)  Vous – since vous means you (plural or formal) the votre and vos mean your. Vous avez votre crayon. (You have your pencil.) Elle a vos papiers. (She has your papers.)

13 Des Exemples  Ils – since ils means they (masc.) the leur and leurs mean their. Ils ont leurs stylos. (They have their pens.) Nous avons leur livre. (We have their book.)  Elles – since elles means they (fem.) the leur and leurs mean their. Elles ont leur pizza. (They have their pizza.) J’ai leurs profs. (I have their teachers.)
