Turkey Migration and Internally Displaced Population Survey (TMIDPS) SURVEY AND SAMPLE DESIGN Dr. A. Sinan TÜRKYILMAZ HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF POPULATION STUDIES http://www.hips.hacettepe.edu.tr/tgyona/tgyona.htm
2
TMIDPS is designed to make inferences on migration and internally displaced people in Turkey. Since the survey especially focuses on IDPs, it is appropriate to divide the survey population into two main strata.
3
2 main strata 1. The first of these strata, which can be named as “Out-migrant provinces” is composed of 14 provinces which experienced dense internally displacement 2. The second of that “in-migrant provinces” which have dense immigration from 14 provinces
4
2 main strata “I n-migrant provinces ” stratum will be constructed by using the information which can be obtained from previous population censuses. These information will be formed by cross-tabulation of the variables “residence for 5 years before the census day” and “place of birth” with “place in census day” “ Out-migrant provinces ” consists of following 14 provinces in East and South-east Anatolia regions (Adıyaman, Ağrı, Batman, Bingöl, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Hakkari, Mardin, Muş, Siirt, Şırnak, Tunceli ve Van).

TMIDPS stratification The sample size of TMIDPS requires different calculations due to its design approach. In other words, total sample size will be the sum of each stratum Stratification will be as follows: Stratum 1: In-migrant provinces- Dense districts (if possible, quarters) stratum Stratum 2: Out-migrant provinces - Urban stratum Stratum 3: Out-migrant provinces – Rural- excluding returned villages stratum Stratum 4: Out-migrant provinces – Returned villages stratum

Sampling and listing implementation and sample sizes in strata Stratum 1: In-migrant provinces- Dense districts (quarters) stratum: This stratum will be formed by means of migration information comes from SIS with maximum detail (if possible quarter level, if not district level), Then sample blocks, which are selected by probabilistic and random procedure, will be screened by a short questionnaire in order to determine the crude migration level of households. Then, the detailed household interviews will be conducted in second stage. This is a two-phase sampling selection operation. A 1000 HH interviews is planned to conduct.
9
Sampling and listing implementation and sample sizes in strata Stratum 2: Out-migrant provinces - Urban: Household interviews will be conducted from the probabilistically and randomly selected blocks of urban stratum which is formed by means of structure enumariton schedules provided by SIS for 14 provinces. It is planned to conduct 1500 household interviews.
10
Sampling and listing implementation and sample sizes in strata Stratum 3: Out-migrant provinces – Rural-excluding for returned villages stratum: Within 14 provinces and excluding returned villages, households will be selected from probabilistically and randomly selected blocks of municipals or villages. It is planned to conduct 1500 household interviews.
11
Sampling and listing implementation and sample sizes in strata Stratum 4: Out-migrant provinces – Returned villages stratum: Households will be selected probabilistically and randomly from the returned villages. It is planned to conduct 500 household interviews.
