3 The Canal Du Midi was built in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet, it took 15 years to build it. The Canal is the Riquet’s idea to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean sea by the river Garonne. Water had to be brought to the Canal, it arrived from the Montagne Noire by the Seuil de Narouze. That way boats would no longer need to go around Spain. In the old days, the economic role of the Canal was essential. It was used to carry goods on barges. The Canal du Midi was added to the UNESCO of word heritage list in 1997.

10 The Canal has 63 locks : the locks keeper used to manipulate the cranks to open and shut the locks. The barges worked with horses and mules in the 19 th century. Today, they are all fully automatic.
