Resources and Markets An Industrialized Country can make a lot of money by: Getting resources from its colonies etc. cheaply Selling its Manufactured Products back to the colonies etc. at a large profit.

Competition Each Western Country is trying to beat the others to Be The Richest Have the Largest Empire Leave its Mark in History

A Mission to Enlighten Some Westerners believed it was their mission to bring civilization to the people of Earth Many believed that Europeans had the duty to help “lesser” races…It was the “White Man’s Burden” Others wanted to bring the “Light of Christianity to the Person sitting in Darkness”

How the West Could Dominate The Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions combined with Competition between European Countries gave “The West” advantages: Economic Power…Wealth Growing Populations Colonists and Armies Advanced Military Technology …Superior Armies and Navies

Naval Technology More than any other one thing The “West’s” superior naval Technology allowed it to dominate…A “Western” Ship could… Could sail anywhere around the Globe Could carry troops and trade goods Mounted Cannon that could destroy anything up to a mile inland Thus they could control the seas, trade and coastal areas
